Hope in the Coming of Christ Jesus by Pastor Ichibei Honda
This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. “Advent” is from the Latin word adventus, which simply translates as “coming” or “arrival”. Thus, Advent is a four-week period of time before Christmas when Christians celebrate the anticipation and coming of the Messiah (Christ). Each of the four Sundays of Advent have a specific theme or focus. The theme for the first Sunday of Advent is “hope”. The prophets of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival. Hope is something that the people of Israel need today and have needed throughout their history as a nation. We will look together at Isaiah 9:1-7, a passage of Scripture that is often read on the first Advent Sunday, and which offers plenty of hope to Israel, as well as to all people including us today.
この日曜は、アドベント（待降節）の最初の日曜日です。「アドベント」とはラテン語のadventusに由来し、簡単に訳すと「到来」または「到着」となります。このように、アドベントとは、クリスチャンがメシア（キリスト）を待ち望み、その到来を祝うクリスマス前の４週間の期間を指します。アドベントの４つの日曜日には、それぞれ特定のテーマや焦点があります。アドベントの最初の日曜日のテーマは、「希望」です。旧約聖書の預言者たち、特にイザヤは、メシアの到来を待ち望んでいました。希望は、イスラエルの人々が今日必要としているものであり、国家としての歴史を通じて必要としてきたものであります。イザヤ書９章１節から７節を一緒に見ます。この聖句は、しばしばアドベント第１主日に朗読され、イスラエル、そして現代の私達を含む全ての人々に多くの希望を与えてくれます。
