“Jesus: The Word, Light, and Only Begotten”

When you read the first four books of the New Testament, which are known as the gospel accounts of Jesus written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, you realize that John’s account of Jesus’ life reads differently than the other three. John writes about some more personal interactions with Jesus that are not found in the other three gospels. Thus, right from the start, the apostle John begins with a bold declaration of Jesus’ divinity, declaring that He is “the Word,” “Light,” and the “only begotten” from the Father. Let us look at these designations of Jesus in detail.
新約聖書の最初の４巻、すなわちマタイ、マルコ、ルカ、ヨハネによって書かれたイエスの福音書と呼ばれる書物を読むと、ヨハネによるイエス様の生涯の記述は、他の３つの福音書とは異なることがわかります。ヨハネは他の３つの福音書には見られない、イエス様とのより個人的な交流について記しています。したがって、使徒ヨハネは冒頭から、イエス様の神性を大胆に宣言し、彼が「言」、「光」、そして父の「ひとり子」であると述べています。イエス様に対するこれらの呼称について詳しく見ていきましょう。
