“Christmas: Good News of Great Joy”

For the third Sunday of Advent, we light a pink Advent candle which stands out from the other candles that are purple. The theme for the third Sunday of Advent is joy and the pink candle is referred to as the Shepherd’s Candle. It is called thus to encourage us to rejoice like the shepherds did on that first Christmas. Luke 2:8-20 records for us what the shepherds experienced on that first Christmas night, and there we see that they received “good news of great joy” from an angel concerning the birth of Jesus, who is Christ the Lord. Let us learn from the shepherds of how we may respond to the good news of Jesus Christ’s coming and share in the great joy that they experienced.
待降節第三主日には、紫色の他のろうそくとは一線を画すピンクの待降節ろうそくに火を灯します。待降節第三日曜日のテーマは喜びであり、このピンクのろうそくは「羊飼いのろうそく」と呼ばれます。それは、最初のクリスマスに羊飼いたちがそうであったように、私たちも喜びにあふれるよう促すために、そう呼ばれているのです。ルカの福音書２章８節から２０節は、最初のクリスマスの夜に羊飼いたちが体験したことを私たちに伝えています。そこでは、彼らが天使から「大きな喜びの福音」を受け取ったことが記されています。それは、主キリストであるイエスの誕生に関する知らせでした。羊飼いたちから、イエス・キリストの到来という良き知らせにどう応えるべきかを学び、彼らが経験した大きな喜びにあずかりましょう。
