Excel Still More

Now may our God and Father Himself and Jesus our Lord direct our way to you; and may the Lord cause you to increase and abound in love for one another, and for all people, just as we also do for you; so that He may establish your hearts without blame in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints.
(1 Thessalonians 3:11-13)

The Thessalonians are commended for their faith, especially in the midst of opposition and tribulation. Paul is genuinely concerned about their spiritual growth and maturing, wanting them to “excel still more” in their faith and in their love for one another. Paul exhorts the Thessalonian believers to remain faithful, and continue to work diligently. These are the very things that we also should take to heart in the midst of the world we live in today.

Sermon Description: What are the final words given to the Thessalonian believers by their concerned teachers and spiritual fathers? The letter ends with a blessing and a benediction: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. This should be our final greeting and statement to one another as believers, and it should also be our word of encouragement to non-believers. Let us excel still more in what God has called us to living out the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Sermon Description: The foundation for living a holy life is of course our relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. The core that enables us; what fuels us to live a holy life, is the Holy Spirit. God calls and enables us to live a holy life, and we need to yield to the Spirit's leading and commit ourselves to obeying God's word in living it out.

Sermon Description: Within the community of Christ, we have a responsibility to love one another and care for one another; to build up one another. As Christians, we also have personal and daily responsibility as a believer, and these involve rejoicing, praying, and being thankful in Jesus Christ.

Sermon Description: At different times in our lives we find ourselves needy and weak, and at other times we find ourselves strong and empowered. The exhortation is for the strong to minister to the weak. Not to look down or despise or ignore the weak, but to genuinely care for them. It is God's will for His family to live this way. We are to encourage and build up one another as fellow believers and soldiers in Christ. We need to be concerned for one another's spiritual well being.

Sermon Description: We are to LIVE as those who are saved, who are of the day, who have eternal life, and thus have hope! We are to be fully cognizant of what is going on around us. We cannot claim ignorance to the things that are happening in the world, or in the lives of those around us. We cannot claim ignorance or apathy toward the darkness that surrounds us. We need to shed God’s light in the dark places of this world, with the hope that people living in the darkness will see God’s ligh...

The hope of eternal life together with Christ, including the hope of resurrection, is something we can and should comfort one another with. A glorious future and eternity awaits us! Let us be more and more steadfast in our hope in Jesus Christ.

Sermon Description: Genuine concern and love for our fellow brethren will be shown through how much we are mindful of them; how much we take joy in their well-being, especially in regards to their faith in Christ; and how much we continue to pray for them. Paul and his companions did not treat the Thessalonian believers, or for that manner any believers, with an attitude of “Out of sight, out of mind”, but rather “In our mind, in our prayers.” Our genuine concern and love for one another shou...

Sermon Description: The Word of God is true and powerful! Faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior, which the Gospel and all of God’s Word proclaims, is what saves us! Nothing can un-save us, not even Satan. Yet, there is real and powerful opposition to the work of God. Paul and his companions knew from firsthand experience of this opposition. As Christians, we should desire to grow in our faith in Christ and witness for Him, and should desire such growth for our fellow brothers and sisters in...

Sermon Description: The Thessalonian believers received Paul and his companions’ teachings as the word of God, and received it in faith. The genuineness of their faith was shown in their imitation of Paul as well as the believers in Judea as they themselves were persecuted for their faith in Jesus. For us too, our reception of God’s word is tested through how we live out our faith in Christ in the midst of persecution and opposition.
